Certificates of origin: type A, type B, type C
A certificate of origin (pedigree) says who a dog’s ancestors are. Its type, A, B or C, says how much of that ancestry is known and verifiable. The type is not chosen: it is determined from the ancestry, over four generations, i.e. 30 positions.
The three types, in short
| Type | When it is granted | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| A | all 30 positions of the ancestry are known, with registration numbers | ancestry fully known |
| B | at least one position is known, but not all | ancestry partly known |
| C | no position is known | conformity with the breed standard; does not attest origin |
A position with a name but no registration number counts as unknown: the number is what makes the position verifiable by someone else. The full rule is in the Stud Book Regulation, Art. 10 and 11.
Type A and type B: certificates of origin
They are issued for puppies from litters declared by members through the Mating and Whelping Declaration, filed online. The declaration names the sire and the dam, and the registry transcribes the rest of the ancestry from the parents’ documents of origin. Nothing is filled in by assumption: an unknown position stays empty, and the certificate comes out as type B.
A puppy from a mating and whelping declaration can never receive type C, because its parents are named in the declaration.
Type C: the breed typicity certificate
It is granted to a dog without documents of origin, after assessment at one of the association’s shows, for conformity with the breed standard. It is the way a purebred dog without a pedigree enters the register.
What you should know before asking for it, or accepting it when buying a dog:
- It does not attest origin. A type C certificate says nothing about the dog’s parents or ancestors, because they are unknown. The note “does not attest origin” appears on the certificate.
- It attests only conformity with the standard, as assessed by the judge on the day of evaluation.
- It carries no health history. A type C dog has no parental tests in the register. If used for breeding, the same rules apply as to any dog (Breeding and Health Regulation, Art. 5), and its puppies, declared through a DMF, receive at least type B.
- It may also be requested by non-members, under the WDF and CFC-Royal regulations.
- A type C dog does not receive title certificates (CAJC, CAC, CACIB) at the show where it is assessed for typicity; it may compete for BOB and Best in Show.
Cost and time
- Issuing a certificate of origin (type A or B): 50 lei per dog, for members; 1–3 months; with the express fee (500 lei), 3 working days.
- The typicity certificate (type C): free, on the spot, if typicity judging was selected at show entry; 80 lei if judging is requested afterwards.
- All current fees: Fees & charges.
How to verify a certificate
Every certificate issued by the association carries a QR code. Scan it or type the series at Verify a pedigree: you see immediately whether the document is genuine, its type and, for types A and B, the registered ancestry. Do not buy a puppy “on trust” with papers you have not verified.
What none of the certificates can do
CFC-Royal certificates are valid in the World Dog Federation system and are mutually recognised by WDF member organisations. In the FCI system they have no effect. Details: What we are and what we are not.
